AdBlue guide

AdBlue countdown and non-start explained

That number on your dash counting down to zero is a manufacturer-designed lockout. Here is what each stage means, why a top-up sometimes doesn't clear it, and how we reset it in Salford.

What the countdown actually is

When the ECU decides the SCR emissions system is not working correctly — low fluid, a failed sensor, a dosing fault — it starts a mileage counter. When that counter reaches zero, the next attempted start is blocked.

It is not a fault with your engine and it will not leave you stranded mid-drive. It simply refuses the next start.

The stages

Most makes follow roughly the same pattern, with wording varying by manufacturer.

  • ✓700 miles — warning appears, countdown starts
  • ✓500 miles — repeated warning on every start
  • ✓200 miles — speed restriction warnings appear on many models
  • ✓0 miles — engine will not restart once switched off

Why a top-up sometimes doesn't clear it

If the countdown was triggered by low fluid, a proper top-up clears it. If it was triggered by a component fault, the counter keeps running no matter how much AdBlue you pour in.

The faults we find most often on Manchester vehicles:

  • ✓NOx sensor failure (upstream or downstream)
  • ✓Blocked or crystallised AdBlue injector
  • ✓Metering pump or pressure line failure
  • ✓Frozen fluid due to a failed tank heater
  • ✓Level or quality sensor reading incorrectly
  • ✓SCR catalyst efficiency below threshold

How we clear it properly

We read live SCR data, confirm the failed component instead of guessing, replace or repair it and reset the counter. You leave with a working system and no lockout waiting to come back next month.

Common questions

Can you clear an AdBlue countdown that has already hit zero?

Yes. We recover the vehicle or attend it, diagnose why the countdown started, repair the fault and reset the counter so the engine starts normally again.

How long does it take?

Most vehicles are done the same day at our Salford workshop. Parts-dependent jobs such as an injector or pump may need a day for supply.

Is it cheaper than a main dealer?

Almost always. We quote a fixed price from £180 before we start, and we only replace what has actually failed rather than a whole SCR assembly.
