DPF guide

Blocked DPF symptoms — how to tell before it costs you

A blocked diesel particulate filter rarely fails without warning. Catch these signs early and it is a clean; ignore them and it becomes a filter, a turbo, or both.

The warning signs

If you recognise two or three of these, get it looked at rather than waiting.

  • ✓DPF light on the dash, steady or flashing
  • ✓Reduced power or limp mode, often capped around 2,500 rpm
  • ✓Strong smell of hot exhaust or diesel after driving
  • ✓Cooling fan running hard after you park up
  • ✓Poor fuel economy compared with a few months ago
  • ✓Oil level rising above the max mark from failed regenerations
  • ✓Rough idle, hesitation or a stop-start system that refuses to work

Why filters block up

A DPF traps soot and burns it off during regeneration, which needs sustained temperature. Short stop-start town driving around Manchester never gets the exhaust hot enough, so soot builds up faster than it burns.

Other causes are mechanical: a leaking injector, a failed EGR valve, a split intercooler pipe or a faulty pressure sensor will all load the filter far quicker than normal driving.

What happens if you ignore it

Failed regenerations dump unburnt diesel into the sump, thinning the oil and starving the turbo of lubrication. That turns a few hundred pound job into a four figure one.

A fully blocked filter also creates back pressure that can damage the turbo and, on some engines, the head gasket.

How we sort it

We read differential pressure and soot load live, decide whether a forced regeneration, an on-car clean or an off-car clean is right, and fix the underlying cause so it does not block again in three months.

Common questions

Can I drive with a blocked DPF?

Short distances only, and not for long. A partially blocked filter often clears on a longer run, but once the vehicle is in limp mode you risk turbo and engine damage by carrying on.

Will a motorway run fix it?

Sometimes. If the DPF is only partially loaded, 20 to 30 minutes at steady motorway revs can trigger a regeneration. If the light stays on, the filter or a sensor needs attention.

What does DPF work cost in Manchester?

DPF diagnostics and cleaning start from £180 at our Salford workshop, quoted as a fixed price once we know the vehicle and the fault codes.
