AdBlue guide
What happens if you don't use AdBlue?
Run a modern diesel without AdBlue and the vehicle warns you, then limits your power, then stops starting altogether. Here is the exact sequence and what to do at each stage.
Stage 1 — the first warning
Around 1,500 to 2,400 miles of AdBlue left, an amber warning appears on the dash telling you the tank is low. Nothing else changes at this point and a top-up clears it.
If the light comes back within a few hundred miles of a genuine top-up, you have a fault — usually a level sensor, a heater, or a dosing problem, not an empty tank.
Stage 2 — the countdown
Below roughly 700 miles the dash starts counting down and tells you the engine will not restart when it reaches zero. The message repeats every time you start the car and gets more insistent as the number drops.
- ✓700 miles — countdown begins, top-up still clears it
- ✓200 miles — repeated warnings, often with a speed limit warning
- ✓0 miles — the engine will not restart once switched off
Stage 3 — reduced power and non-start
At zero the ECU enters a no-restart state. Many manufacturers also cut power beforehand, limiting the vehicle to around 30 to 50 mph so you can get home or to a garage.
This is designed into the vehicle by the manufacturer — it is not a breakdown, and jumping or recovering the vehicle will not clear it.
When topping up doesn't fix it
If you have filled the tank and the countdown continues, the system itself has failed. The usual culprits we see in the workshop:
- ✓NOx sensor failure, upstream or downstream
- ✓Crystallised or blocked AdBlue injector
- ✓Failed metering pump or pressure fault
- ✓Tank heater or level sensor failure
- ✓SCR efficiency below threshold (P20EE and related codes)
What we do about it
We plug in, read the live data rather than guess, and tell you exactly which part has failed and what it costs. Most vehicles are in and out the same day from our Salford workshop at M7 1UL, and we run a mobile service across Greater Manchester when the vehicle cannot be moved.
Common questions
Can I top up AdBlue myself?
Yes. AdBlue is sold at most fuel stations and motor factors. Pour it into the blue filler cap, never into the diesel tank. If the warning stays on after a proper top-up, the fault is in the system, not the fluid.
Will the engine really refuse to start?
Yes. Once the countdown reaches zero the ECU blocks the next start until the fault is cleared. It does not strand you mid-journey, but it will not restart once switched off.
How much is it to fix in Manchester?
AdBlue diagnostics and repair start from £180 at our Salford workshop, with the exact price fixed before we start.
