DPF warning light on? Here's what it actually means
A plain-English guide from a Salford DPF specialist: what each warning means, what you can safely try yourself, and when it needs equipment. If you'd rather just ask, message us your reg — advice is free.
What your dash is telling you
Solid amber DPF light
What it means: Soot has built up and the car wants to run a regeneration. Nothing is broken yet.
What to do: Drive for 20–30 minutes at a steady 40–60 mph in a lower gear so revs sit around 2,000–2,500. If the light clears, it worked.
Flashing DPF light
What it means: Regeneration has failed or the soot load is now too high for the car to clear on its own.
What to do: Don't keep driving it hard. It needs a forced regeneration or a clean on diagnostic equipment.
DPF light + engine management light
What it means: There's an underlying fault — often a pressure sensor, EGR valve, injector or turbo issue.
What to do: Get the codes read before spending money. Replacing a filter without fixing the cause wastes money.
Limp mode / power loss
What it means: The ECU has protected the engine because the filter is severely blocked or pressure is out of range.
What to do: Stop driving where you can. Call us — this is the point where damage to the turbo becomes a real risk.
Glow plug light flashing too
What it means: On many VAG and Ford models this pairing points at a failed regeneration attempt.
What to do: Needs a live-data check on differential pressure and exhaust temperature.
Why DPFs block in the first place
- !Mostly short, cold journeys — the exhaust never gets hot enough to regenerate
- !A faulty differential pressure sensor giving the ECU the wrong reading
- !A sticking or blocked EGR valve pushing extra soot into the filter
- !A leaking or worn injector producing excess soot
- !Wrong or overdue engine oil (low-SAPS oil is required on most DPF vehicles)
- !Regenerations repeatedly interrupted by short trips or being switched off mid-cycle
How we sort it
1. Read the real data
Differential pressure, soot mass, ash load, exhaust temperature and every stored code — not just a quick code read.
2. Find the cause
Sensor, EGR, injector, turbo or driving pattern. We tell you which, honestly, before any parts are mentioned.
3. Clear the filter
Forced regeneration or an on-vehicle clean depending on soot and ash levels.
4. Fix the root fault
So the light doesn't come back in a month. Repairs quoted at a fixed price before we start.
5. Reset and verify
Adaptations reset, values re-checked on live data, and a short road test before we leave.
Diagnostics from £45 (refunded against the repair), DPF work from £180 — see full pricing. All work keeps your vehicle road-legal and MOT compliant.
Still not sure?
Send us your registration and what the dash is showing. We'll tell you honestly whether it's a drive-it-out job or something that needs us — no charge for the advice.
